6. Wasabi
Brooch
Sterling Silver .925 and 3mm Natural Peridot
A close friend spent the better part of a year trying to convince me to make a brooch. I’d brush it off with, “No one even wears brooches,” and she’d counter with, “A subset of very chic people do… you just don’t notice.” Turns out, she was right. Somehow, without me realizing it, brooches had moved beyond the lapels of elderly women at funerals and were actually kind of everywhere once the cooler months hit.
To be honest, I wasn’t totally convinced at first, was I just making one because they were already cool? Maybe. But what really sold me was seeing how playful other jewelry designers got with brooches. It just looked like fun.
This piece is modeled after a hazy memory of those snowboard goggles from the SSX Tricky era. It’s got a bit of that “snowboarder in a silly worm hat” energy while still being a subtle, sparkly piece you can throw on. The peridot stones have that wasabi color, and when I was looking for something to add visual interest in photos, I ended up styling it with wasabi + seaweed crackers, so the name stuck.
The back is a little… rustic. But that’s how you know it’s handmade....it’s got character.
